Item Usage Inheritance

Updated over 2 months ago

Item Usage Inheritance simplifies demand planning by integrating historical usage data from previous item versions directly into Recurrency. This feature ensures accurate forecasting and stock optimization when items are replaced or updated by suppliers.

How It Works

1. Set Up Item Usage Inheritance

  • Navigate to the Forecasting or Planning tabs.

  • Select an item-location pair and open the Usage Graph.

  • Click Edit Usage Inheritance to select one or more items whose historical usage should be applied to the new item.

  • When you set up usage inheritance, Recurrency will flag items with UOMs that don’t match and cannot be used for inheritance.

2. (Optional) Sync with Your ERP

  • If your ERP system (e.g., P21) has substitute relationships configured, and you prefer to have Recurrency read this data, an admin can enable syncing in Recurrency to automatically integrate this data.

  • To enable syncing:

    • Go to Settings and toggle Sync Usage Inheritance to P21: Substitute.

    • Once activated, Recurrency will use your ERP-defined substitutes for usage inheritance and planning, keeping the system aligned with your ERP configuration.

3. View Combined Usage Data

  • Open the Demand Planning Pane for an item.

  • If the item inherits usage, you’ll see combined usage data that includes historical usage from predecessor items.

  • Forecasts, Min/Max values, and usage graphs will reflect the merged data.

  • Combined usage aggregates historical data from previous items with current usage, providing a full picture for better planning.

  • Recurrency will reflect changes made to item usage inheritance and let you know when items will start and stop inheriting usage from particular items after changes are made.

4. Usage Inheritance Tab

  • There is now a tab within the Usage window called Usage Inheritance.

  • This tab allows you to set up multiple item ancestors and shows the status of whether they are included in usage or not.

  • If you’re using Substitutes from P21, this tab also surfaces that information.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I differentiate between historical and current usage in the charts

Yes. Historical usage from predecessor items is displayed in a different color, making it easier to analyze trends.

2. Can I manage substitutes manually but use my ERP’s substitutes as a starting point?

  • Absolutely! Recurrency offers flexible management options:

    • If you’re not using P21 substitutes, you can add and manage item substitutes directly within Recurrency via the Usage tab in the Planning module.

    • For hybrid setups, you can reach out to your Customer Success team and request a one-time import of substitutes from your ERP (e.g., P21) and then handle any changes manually within Recurrency going forward.
